About the Spanish La Liga

La Liga, officially known as LALIGA EA Sports for sponsorship reasons, is Spain's top professional football division. Founded in 1929, it is contested by 20 clubs and operates on promotion and relegation with the Segunda División. It is regarded as one of the top national leagues in world football and has produced more UEFA Champions League winners than any other country, driven largely by the dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona — the two clubs that contest El Clásico and have together won the vast majority of La Liga titles in the modern era.

Tournament Format

20 clubs play a home-and-away double round-robin for 38 matches per team. Three points for a win, one for a draw. The top clubs qualify for European competition and the bottom three are relegated to the Segunda División.

  1. Regular season August to May. 380 total matches, 38 per team.
  2. Champions League places Top 4 qualify directly for the UEFA Champions League league phase.
  3. Europa & Conference League 5th enters Europa League; 6th enters Conference League play-offs (cup winners may shift the allocation).
  4. Relegation Bottom 3 clubs drop to the Segunda División.
  5. Tiebreakers Head-to-head record between tied teams is used before goal difference — different to most leagues.
